Areas of Practice

Criminal Appeals

In Massachusetts, when a criminal trial results in conviction, a client has a right to appeal that conviction to the appellate courts. On direct appeal, the attorney pursues reversal of the conviction by reviewing the entire record in a case, identifying legal issues, filing an appellate brief, and arguing the appeal.

Post-Conviction Litigation

Sometimes, after a conviction, it is necessary to go back to the trial court for further litigation, either before or after pursuing a direct appeal. This may involve, for example, arguing a motion for new trial or a stay of execution of sentence. On post-conviction review, the attorney investigates whether there are viable grounds to pursue one of these avenues of relief, and files and litigates any relevant motions.
